Definition
The disaster check is the filter that subjects a name candidate to its possible negative interpretations in the target region and languages: unpleasant sound, double meaning, or offensive or ridiculous meaning in another language. Its purpose is to discard names that, while valid locally, fail when crossing borders —such as the *Mitsubishi Pajero* (from Japan) or the Nigerian *Mamador* cooking oil—.
