Definition
Collective intelligence is a group's capacity to produce knowledge or solutions better than any of its members could alone, provided there are mechanisms to aggregate individual contributions. Wikipedia, open source software and Q&A communities all run on it. It works when three conditions align — diverse participants, independent contributions and an aggregation mechanism (versioning, voting, review) that filters and combines them. For digital products it turns the community from an audience into part of the system that creates value.
